mrnSsmmmMB Firestone Forming the fiber • Twisting, a textile proces sing operation at Firestone- Gastonia. This is the initial step. generally called "ply" twisting (a holdover from the "days of cotton.") It is a basic forming process, adding twist to the syn thetic yarn as it is received on beams from the materials sup plier. A second step, cord twist ing, is the combining of more than 1 twisted strand of yarn and adding further twist. Es sentially, twist introduces strength to a string or cord. The Firestone plants at Gas tonia, Bennettsville and Bowling Green do both basic twisting operations, making ready syn thetic fiber for weaving into lire fabric. So he called it rubber. Pirestly, the eminent English clergyman, chemist and physi cist, perhaps is best remembered as discoverer of oxygen. But through his “erasing” experi ment, he may have become the first person to add carbon black to rubber. Stock Purchase at $13.48 The trustee for the Firestone Stock Purchase & Savings Plan in April bought Firestone common stock for accounts of participating employees at an average $13.48 per share. Manufacturers Hanover Trust Co., does the buying for Firestone. As of the April report (May figures not available until too late for this issue of paper) there were 9,594 employees enrolled in the purchase/savings plan. The way “average” per-share price is figured: Total purchase cost of stock for a given month divided by total number of shares bought the same month.
